Matthew 20:1-15

1 “For the Kingdom of Heaven is like a man who was the master of a household, who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard.  2 When he had agreed with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard.  3 He went out about the third hour, and saw others standing idle in the marketplace.  4 To them he said, 'You also go into the vineyard, and whatever is right I will give you.' So they went their way.  5 Again he went out about the sixth and the ninth hour, and did likewise.  6 About the eleventh hour he went out, and found others standing idle. He said to them, 'Why do you stand here all day idle?'

7 “They said to him, 'Because no one has hired us.'  "He said to them, 'You also go into the vineyard, and you will receive whatever is right.'  8 When evening had come, the lord of the vineyard said to his steward, 'Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning from the last to the first.'

9 “When those who were hired at about the eleventh hour came, they each received a denarius.  10 When the first came, they supposed that they would receive more; and they likewise each received a denarius.  11 When they received it, they murmured against the master of the household,  12 saying, 'These last have spent one hour, and you have made them equal to us, who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat!'

13 “But he answered one of them, 'Friend, I am doing you no wrong. Didn't you agree with me for a denarius?  14 Take that which is yours, and go your way. It is my desire to give to this last just as much as to you.  15 Isn't it lawful for me to do what I want to with what I own? Or is your eye evil, because I am good?'

James 3:14-16

14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your heart, don't boast and don't lie against the truth.  15 This wisdom is not that which comes down from above, but is earthly, sensual, and demonic.  16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition are, there is confusion and every evil deed.

Isaiah 14:12-14

12 How you are fallen from heaven, day-star, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, who laid the nations low!  13 You said in your heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God; and I will sit on the mountain of congregation, in the uttermost parts of the north;  14 I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.

Proverbs 14:30

30 The life of the body is a heart at peace,  But envy rots the bones.

2 Corinthians 10:12

12 For we are not bold to number or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves. But they themselves, measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves with themselves, are without understanding.

John 21:18-22

18 Most assuredly I tell you, when you were young, you dressed yourself, and walked where you wanted to. But when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you, and carry you where you don't want to go.”

19 Now he said this, signifying by what kind of death he would glorify God. When he had said this, he said to him, “Follow me.”

20 Then Peter, turning around, saw a disciple following. This was the disciple whom Jesus sincerely loved, the one who had also leaned on Jesus' breast at the supper and asked, "Lord, who is going to betray You?"  21 Peter seeing him, said to Jesus, "Lord, what about this man?"

22 Jesus said to him, “If I desire that he stay until I come, what is that to you? You follow me.”

Galatians 6:4-5

4 But let each man test his own work, and then he will take pride in himself and not in his neighbor.  5 For each man will bear his own burden.
